February's VIP - Dr. Eric Wu
“My makeover time with Janice helped my career and my confidence. The mere thought of speaking in public four years ago would have caused me to break out in a cold sweat and my stomach to twist up in knots. I am a private practice orthodontist whose recent career path has unexpectedly thrust me into the public spotlight. I am so happy I was introduced to Janice as she provided me with the missing links to polish the public-facing side of my image. I now look at my current wardrobe in an entirely different light. My only regret is that I didn't find Janice earlier in my career!” Dr. Eric Wu

Trends - Eyewear
Changing Styles – eyewear update. It’s NOT about having your glasses disappear or blend in anymore. Strong frames, with a wider rim and stronger colors, are what you will want to be looking for this year in eyewear. A former client, Sara, contacted me recently to help her pick out new frames. She was trying to duplicate what we had chosen 8 years ago and I had to advise her otherwise. Her round face still needed the diagonal shape (not a round shape) but she needed a stronger statement in her frames. Be sure to look at your glasses from the side too. People see your profile just as much as they see you face on. I am not a fan of too much decoration on the side as it can be distracting.

Color Street’s 100% Real Nail Polish Strips - Ok - I am a fan! They are easy to use, inexpensive and they last. While spending Christmas vacation with my daughter and her family, I was introduced to Color Street Nails. My daughter had purchased them for her 3 daughters (age range 14 – 7). In the course of applying the nails to the girls and ourselves, we discovered this new product had its benefits including being budget friendly and convenient.

Mind Your Manners
“I don’t mean to be disrespectful but….”   In truth, just save your breath because whatever else follows doesn’t matter because it will indeed be taken as disrespectful. Here’s just some of the other errors we make in judgement as we declare our intent. Look closer.

  • “I don’t want to gossip but...”
  • “Don’t get me wrong…I think the world of him but…”
  • “I am not one to spread rumors but…”
  • “I am not saying she can’t do the job but…”
Health and Fitness
35 years later and I am still pushing weights around but with a whole different focus. I wouldn’t dream of going into a gym with mirrors now. LOL

I recently competed in a Master’s Crossfit Competition in San Francisco just to do something I was terrified of doing. I don’t think that Crossfit or lifting weights is for everyone…not at all.
What I do believe is that it’s good to move and move hard enough to break a sweat. At 65 years of age, I am now inclined to celebrate what I can do and try not to focus on my limitations. I don’t think the years of time age us as much as our natural inclination to be sedentary speeds up atrophy.
Photography Tips

Whatever is closest to the camera looks the biggest.  A safe, general rule of thumb is that men typically like to appear stronger and bolder than their female partner in photos. If that’s the case, remember the rule that whatever is closest to the camera will look the biggest and position yourself accordingly. Men should step just a tad bit in front of their female partner so their shoulders will look broader and her essence will portray a flattering feminine presence.

This photo was taken by me standing about 3 feet above my subjects to accent their faces.  Strong bright colors, like Dayna’s fuchsia sweater, will always play well against the solid blue of her husband, Kevin’s jacket. Solid colors with one point of pattern works well in a photo composition.
